Albendazole: A Broad-Spectrum Anthelmintic
Albendazole is a broad-spectrum benzimidazole anthelmintic effective against a wide range of nematodes, cestodes, and trematodes, including, Fasciola hepatica (adult stage). Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the polymerization of tubulin, thereby disrupting microtubule formation within the parasite. Additionally, it impairs glucose uptake and interferes with the enzyme fumarate reductase, leading to reduced energy production, paralysis, and eventual death of the parasite.
Albendazole exhibits wormicidal, larvicidal, and ovicidal properties, making it effective for both prophylaxis and treatment of infections caused by tapeworms, roundworms, and flukes in their adult and larval stages.
